This 8,445-acre property is a tremendous addition to a network of previously protected land. It is adjacent to another 1,200-acre Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy protected property, Pisgah National Forest, Mt. Mitchell State Park, and the Blue Ridge Parkway. The Big Butt Trail, accessed from the Walker Knob Overlook on the Parkway, milepost 359.8, travels along the western boundary of the Big Tom Wilson Preserve. This property contains the entire Upper Cane River Watershed, and its protection ensures the health of important trout waters. It lies within the NC Natural Heritage Program’s Cane River Upper Watershed Natural Area.
