The Plott Balsam Range extends from an elevation of 2,100 feet in Sylva to over 6,000 feet at Yellow Face and Waterrock Knob. High elevation rocky summits occur near the top of the north face and downslope along the southeast slope of the preserve. The preserve is home to a wide variety of forest types including spruce-fir, and supports four rare plant species and a rare salamander.
